Stories of Our Sheroes by Sridevi

Book Review -

Inspired by the popular Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, author Sridevi has gifted us with Stories of Our Sheroes, a book she always wished to see, dedicated to the extraordinary women of India.

This remarkable compilation introduces us to 100 pioneering women from various fields, including freedom fighters, armed forces, arts, aviation, civil services, law, literature, medicine, public affairs, social work, sports, STEM, and trade & industry.

The stories in this collection are nothing short of inspirational. They pay tribute to many unsung heroines of India, whose contributions often go unnoticed in mainstream narratives.

Despite my extensive reading on history and general affairs, I found myself learning about numerous aspects and achievements previously unknown to me.

This book is not only a wealth of information but also a source of deep motivation. The women featured in these pages faced immense hardships and challenges.

Yet, they persevered, paving the way for future generations of women, including people like me and you. Today, women can freely pursue education and careers, but this was not always the case. Many of these sheroes had to fight vehemently for the rights and freedoms we now enjoy.

For example, I was unaware of the discrimination in the Indian Civil Services where women were once required to resign from their posts upon marriage.

This is just one of the many eye-opening revelations in the book, underscoring that our current freedoms were hard-won by these pioneering women. Their struggles and triumphs are a stark reminder to be grateful for the liberties we often take for granted.

This book holds a special place in my heart, and it's the kind of literature I would love to read to my child one day. Celebrating the legacies of these remarkable women is crucial, and it is disheartening that our school and college curricula do not provide enough details about them. This needs to change if we are to empower women and inspire the younger generation.

Sridevi's debut effort is commendable, and I eagerly look forward to reading more from her. This book is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in learning about the formidable women who have shaped the history and future of India.
