The Lehenga Games by Sukriti YJ

Book Review -

The Lehenga Games by Sukriti YJ is my second read from the author, and much like her debut, Gold Digger, this one too had me hooked from the start.

This fast-paced fiction introduces us to Mihika (Mihu), an ambitious aspiring fashion designer with big dreams of transforming the Indian bridalwear industry. Despite her passion and talent, Mihu is struggling to make her mark—until an unexpected opportunity arrives in the form of a high-profile bridal design competition.

Bollywood celebrity Krita Suri is organising an elite competition to design her wedding trousseau. The catch? The chosen designer must create four original looks within ten days, and with a limited budget. And if that was not daunting enough, Mihu must compete against seasoned designers with established reputations.

Things get even more interesting when she is forced to team up with Bodhi, a socially conscious designer who is far more concerned with the rights and working conditions of labourers in the fashion industry than with glam and glitz. Their ideologies clash, yet they find themselves collaborating—and eventually joined by two more unconventional players, each with secrets and motives of their own.

What follows is a whirlwind of challenges, emotional drama, unexpected alliances, and personal revelations. Each day brings a new twist, leaving Mihu and Bodhi constantly questioning whether they stand a real chance in this cutthroat world. Beyond the drama, the book offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the intricate world of Indian bridal fashion—the fabrics, the craftsmanship, and the business politics that often go unnoticed.

I loved how Sukriti YJ balances the light-hearted chaos of a rom-com with insightful commentary on the fashion industry, especially the unspoken struggles of those working behind the scenes. While I thoroughly enjoyed her debut novel, this one shows growth in both storytelling and theme. It is an entertaining read that packs a surprising punch of substance beneath its glossy surface.

Quick, engaging, and full of drama—I would definitely recommend The Lehenga Games to readers who enjoy contemporary Indian fiction with flair and a bit of fashion sparkle. Perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a breezy yet meaningful read.
