Chaurasi Satya Vyas

Book Review -

Chaurasi (eighty-four in English) by Satya Vyas is based on the riots of Bokaro, Jharkhand, that happened after the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She was killed by her Sikh bodyguards, which flared the anti-Sikh riots in the whole country.

The story starts with Rishi, an orphan. He pretends to be introverted in her colony, but in reality, he is disobedient, tenacious, and cranky. Another main character is Manu, the daughter of Mr. Chhabra, who is also the landlord of Rishi. She is beautiful, headstrong, but naive, and immediately falls in love with Rishi.

The first part of the story is dedicated to Rishi and Manu's relationship, their feelings, and gullible fights with each other. They were happy, but when did happiness lasts forever?

The riots started in their city, Rishi wanted to keep Manu and her family safe, but he had to become a part of violence to do so. That night Rishi felt the absolute horror; the merciless killings, plundering, and ravishing shook him from inside. But, despite all his efforts, will he be able to save Manu?

This is the first Hindi historical fiction book that I read, and it touched me. My heart goes to the community who suffered this in real life. This story depicts political agendas, personal vendettas, human's demonic stance, and an innocent love story amid this upheaval.

The book is turned into a web series named Grahan, available on Disney Hotstar if you wish to watch it. But I urge you to read the book first. I enjoy it and recommend it.
