History is one of my favorite subjects, but I know many people find it monotonous and dull, maybe because no one is creative enough to narrate the tales in an intriguing manner. But when I noticed books like 3 & The Emerald Stone of Irene, I knew that I wanted to read them.
Vinod Raman Nair's debut book is a perfect blend of fiction, history, and some unbelievable illusions with action sequences. So naturally, one would love to watch this kind of book on the big screen.
The story begins with the dramatic deaths and a missing archaeologist Dr. Varma. The organization assigned the case to Ajay and Kabir, also excavator, to find him. Samyukta, Dr. Varma's daughter, also joined them and was selected as a team leader.
Ajay had a history with Dr. Varma, which made him hate Samyukta, and he was an ass to her from the starting. But Kabir and others in the group, who joined them along the way, also misbehave with her, which I personally don't like. Samyukta was no saint, she is an egoist like Ajay, and they have never seen eye to eye. Still, I had sympathy with her and not with male characters.
Their mission was to find the archaeologist, but firstly, Ajay and Kabir journeyed to different cities and states to find the missing pieces of the story. After that, they made friends like Meera and Michael and dangerous enemies, like The Order of the Nine Angels, a neo-Nazi Satanic institution that wanted to kill them and acquire the occult stone to rule the world.
Ajay was skeptical all the way that there was no such thing, and his only mission was to find the doctor. The story has many twists and turns. Some I realized beforehand, while others didn't, making the story exciting.
The only thing that I didn't like was character development. Vinod Raman Nair needs to work on that because they all seem shallow and too fictional; it's hard to connect with any of them. Also, I was not too fond of how he portrays female characters, maybe because the male ones are way too in their heads.
But overall, the story is fast-paced with many historical events, and I appreciate the author's research and smooth narrative from starting to the end. I can't wait to read the other parts of the series. If you're looking for a fascinating action-adventure historical fiction, then this book is for you. I recommend it.
